Cornyn announced a $284,993 federal grant has been awarded to the North Texas Crime Commission (NTCC) and discussed with local leaders how best to utilize the funding to expand and improve the organization's role in fighting against crime. Funding for the Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition

On Monday, at the request of Congressman Culberson, the Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition received over $4.7 million from the Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program, administered by the Department of Justice.

The competitive program, included in the FY 08 Congressional budget, supports local law enforcement agencies by providing them with resources to improve the capacity of their local justice systems.

Securing our border remains a top priority to Congressman Culberson, and as an appropriator, he works passionately to ensure that Congress provides law enforcement agencies with the resources they need to establish law and order and improve public safety. This funding will be distributed to several county sheriffs’ offices to boost law enforcement services, enhance coordination between local, state and federal agencies and increase patrolling along the Texas/Mexico border. The Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition works closely with the Customs and Border Protection Agency to coordinate security measures on the border.

The health fair, hosted by Families Under Urban and Social Attack (FUUSA), is held annually to prepare area students for the school year, offering preventive health services such as screenings and immunizations. "As Houston students prepare to return to school Monday, there is no better time for children and parents to stock up on health tips and receive preventive services like immunizations and screenings to help keep them healthy throughout the school year. I had the opportunity to meet with a number of Houston families and students at the Children's Health Day expo today and discuss with them the importance of being proactive when it comes to our health. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today visited the E-Z Mart fuel station in Texarkana to discuss the need for immediate action to increase domestic energy production and bring down prices at the pump for East Texas families and businesses. Throughout the August work period, Sen. Cornyn has been visiting with Texans across the state and said gas prices remain their top concern. "I've had the opportunity to meet with a variety of Texans this month and have consistently heard they are fed up with high gas and energy prices. My visit today to Texarkana was no different. I share their frustrations, as gas prices in Texas and across the U.S. are still a dollar more per gallon than they were a year ago. The burden is on Congress to pass the necessary energy solutions to bring substantive relief to Texas businesses and families. "Instead of providing real, common-sense energy solutions, Democrats elected to adjourn for the month while the American people, including millions of Texans, are forced to accept the consequences and pay higher prices at the pump. When we return to Congress in September, I will do my best to hold the majority accountable for their inaction, and get a comprehensive, bipartisan, sensible solution enacted as soon as possible.

Hello, my name is Jonathan Dumire and I am very glad to have had the opportunity to serve as a Congressional intern this summer with Congressman Mike Conaway. The tenure of my internship was served during both Congress being in session and during recess. It was an important step for me to actually work in the office and be able to help serve the constituents of District 11. As it goes it is my dream and goal to serve the citizens of Texas in public life as an elected official. I tried my first hand at reaching that goal last November during my run for Midland City Councilman. I was unsuccessful but had a good showing. During the internship I was able to improve my office skills, meet and become friends with people from all over the country, and see how party politics and the art of compromise really happens on the national government level. With the help of a great staff and an understanding Staff Assistant I was able to learn many new things about our district and the way Capitol Hill runs. It was a dream come true when I was able to go and sit on the house floor where so many great Representative have sat before (one being Mike). It was a great experience and something I suggest any college student interested in politics look into, whether or not it is your field of study. It is an experience I will not forget and an opportunity that will benefit me for years to come. I will graduate from UTPB in Odessa, TX with my B.S. in Political Science in May and plan to go on to get a M.P.A. I hope that sooner than later I will be able to continue to serve the great citizens of District 11 and Texas.

AUSTIN-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today in Austin met with the Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA) whose members represent more than 300 cities across Texas and serve more than 15 million Texans. Sen. Cornyn received an update from Chief J.D. Martinez of Weslaco on crime-fighting in regions across Texas, including those related to border security and efforts along the border. In turn, Sen. Cornyn discussed his work on the federal level to ensure law enforcement officers have every protection they need to safeguard the people of Texas. "Today's meeting with the Texas Police Chiefs Association was informative and productive. With increased Mexican drug cartel and gang activity in Texas, the police chiefs voiced the need for more support and boots on the ground. I pledged to continue to do all I can to support them and secure increased funding for their important efforts. "Members of the Texas Police Chiefs Association are responsible for the protection of more than 15 million Texans, and they have done a remarkable job with this enormous responsibility. I will continue to work in Congress to ensure they are equipped with the necessary resources and support they need to carry out their duties," Sen. Cornyn said.

New Report Says Iraq Oil Money Flowing In

Iraq possesses the third-largest oil reserves in the world, and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report stating that Iraq is increasingly in a better position to finance its own security and economic needs. The GAO said Iraq this year will likely earn between $67 billion and $79 billion in oil sales – at least twice the average annual amount Iraq generated from 2005 through 2007. In comments included with the report, U.S. Treasury said that Iraq is moving toward a stronger position to “ultimately shoulder the full burden of its development, reconstruction, and security programs,” while cautioning that the country still needs to improve its budgeting and accountability for funds.

To date, American taxpayers have provided nearly $45 billion for the reconstruction of Iraq. Additionally, more than 40 nations outside of the U.S. have pledged $15.9 billion in economic reconstruction funds to Iraq.

With the increase in Iraq’s oil sales, it is reasonable to ask the Iraqi government to shoulder more of the financial burden of reconstruction. We should continue working with Iraq’s leaders to put a budget system in place to fund and manage its own reconstruction costs. Congressman Culberson has worked with his colleagues in the House on numerous occasions to include language in spending bills that would shift responsibility for reconstruction assistance funding from U.S. taxpayers to the Iraqi government, and will continue to work toward this end.

The Congressman does NOT support the abandonment of Iraq or an immediate reduction in troop levels. Our soldiers, sailors, Airmen, and Marines have freed the people of Iraq from a modern-day Hitler, and they continue to protect them and us from international terrorist organizations. Our country will be safer when Iraq is a stable and functional democracy.

HOUSTON-U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, (R-TX-02), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today hosted a meeting with representatives from the West Brook Bus Crash Families. This group is comprised of parents of the victims of a fatal bus accident in 2006 that injured and killed members of the Beaumont West Brook High School Girls' Soccer team. The parents are advocates on behalf of their children for higher motor coach and school bus safety standards on the local, state and federal level. While the organization was scheduled to meet with Sen. Cornyn in Washington next month, he rescheduled the meeting for today in light of last week's tragic bus accident in Sherman and the need for immediate attention. Sen. Cornyn: Government Of Iraq Must Start Paying Its Own Way

AUSTIN-In a letter sent late yesterday to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn echoed his remarks from Sunday on CNN's "Late Edition" that America must remind the Government of Iraq "that our willingness to lend a hand in their country's reconstruction has limits." Sen. Cornyn asked Secretary Gates to redouble his efforts in shifting to the Iraqis the role and responsibility for the reconstruction effort and asked for a detailed report on this matter as soon as possible. Sen. Cornyn, who is supporting a provision in the fiscal year 2009 Defense Authorization bill that would greatly restrict the use of U.S. dollars for Iraqi reconstruction, expressed his concern regarding the findings of a recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that stated the Government of Iraq has amassed a considerable budget surplus but has spent little of that money on the reconstruction of its own country. "As I am sure you would agree, the American taxpayer should not be forced to shoulder the burden and cost of reconstructing Iraq when Iraq itself has large budget surpluses," Sen. Cornyn wrote in his letter to Secretary Gates. According to the report from the GAO, the Iraqi government generated an estimated $96 billion in revenues from 2005 to 2007, 94 percent of which are attributable to oil revenues. For 2008, the GAO estimates that Iraq will generate an additional $73 billion to $86 billion in revenues, primarily driven by the high price of oil, resulting in a budget surplus of as much as $50.3 billion. The GAO report also states that the Iraqi government spent only 28 percent of its $12.2 billion capital investment budget in 2007.
