WASHINGTON —U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Representative Sander Levin (D-MI) today announced House passage of H.R. 3221, the Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008, which includes a provision encouraging American manufacturers to invest in the economy, thereby creating jobs here at home. The provision allows manufacturers and other companies to utilize built up tax credits to stimulate the economy, invest in capital, and create new jobs. H.R. 3221 will now come to the Senate for final passage.

This legislation, which is cosponsored by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), would establish a federal interagency taskforce responsible for creating a national strategy for combating obesity across America.

WASHINGTON – Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Carl Levin (D-Mich.) announced today that the Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a bill to fund $99,770,000 in military construction projects in Michigan for fiscal year 2009. The Detroit Arsenal in Warren will receive more than two-thirds of that amount, $68.5 million, to support the influx of more than 1,000 personnel moving to the base from other locations around the country.

Congress considered the DRILL Act last week, which failed passage in the House. While I'm glad that we are finally considering energy legislation in Congress, I strongly feel that this bill was not the right approach. I voted against the bill and I want to use this week's update to explain why and to outline my philosophy for solving with the energy crisis.

I spent the week of Independence Day working throughout the First District. In between working in my district offices, I was honored to spend time with the Coast Guard, take a tour and meet with officials at William & Mary, visit Ferry Farm for the unveiling of archaeological discovery of George Washington's boyhood home, and to meet with constituents in Fredericksburg about gas prices.
