(WASHINGTON, DC) -I am deeply concerned with the announcement of the Secretary of the Navy's preference to create a second East Coast homeport for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in Mayport, FL. Economic conditions and national security requirements are not being given the attention they deserve in the midst of the financial and strategic challenges facing our nation today.

As the economic crisis unfolds, there have been a series of proposals and initiatives set forth by both the Administration and Congress to address the situation. The President recently announced that he will hold a series of global economic forums in order to better coordinate the worldwide response. The economic recovery legislation before Congress this week has required more examination and thoughtful consideration than any other issue since my election to Congress. I have heard from thousands of constituents who have called and written over the last week to voice their opinions about the current economic crisis. This is the most important vote that Congress has undertaken in years, and I have wrestled extensively with both sides of the issue.
